A series of steps must be taken in order to become certified by the Board of Insurance Medicine as an expert in Insurance Medicine, including:

1. Application for Accepted Candidate Status
The Application Form may be obtained from the Secretary-Treasurer, Board of Insurance Medicine.* To qualify, an applicant must:

a) Be in good standing with medical licensing authority in the jurisdiction in which the candidate is domiciled. A copy of a current license is required.
b) Be in the active practice of Insurance Medicine, either full or part time.
c) Submit the application and the non-refundable application fee.

Note: The candidate must apply for examination (both written and oral) within five years from the date of approval of accepted candidate status, or forfeit the status. Reapplication for accepted candidate status may be made at any time with repayment of the application fee.

2. The Written Examination
Eligibility requirements to sit for the Written Examination in Insurance Medicine include:

a) Accepted candidate status.
b) A minimum of six months experience in Insurance Medicine, on either full or part time basis.
c) Evidence of the successful completion of either (1) (a) LOMA 280 - Principles of Insurance: Life, Health and Annuities, or LOMA 281 - Meeting Customer Needs with Insurance and Annuities; (b) LOMA 290 - Insurance Company Operations or LOMA 291 - Improving the Bottom Line; and (c) either LOMA 311 - Business Law for Financial Services Professionals (U.S.) or LOMA 316 - Business Law for Financial Services Professionals (Canada), or (2) Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) HS 323 Individual Life Insurance and HS 324 Life Insurance Law.

The Written Examination will be offered in the same year as the Triennial Course in Insurance Medicine, on a date following the Triennial; the date and sites to be determined by the Examination Committee. The Written Examination may also be taken at the time of the AAIM Annual Meeting in non-Triennial years.

Application to take the written examination should be submitted to the Secretary-Treasurer of the Board of Insurance Medicine no later than three months prior to the AAIM Annual Meeting.

Applications for the written exam are published in the Journal of Insurance Medicine or may be obtained directly from the Secretary-Treasurer of the Board of Insurance Medicine.

3. The Oral Examination
Eligibility requirements to sit for the Oral Examination in Insurance Medicine include:

a) Accepted candidate status.
b) Successful completion of the Written Examination.
c) A minimum of four years experience in Insurance Medicine, on either a full or part time basis.
d) Evidence of successful completion of the Basic Mortality Methodology course.

Oral Examinations may be offered at the AAIM, ACLI Medical Section, and CLIMOA annual meetings.

Requests to schedule oral exams should be directed to the Secretary-Treasurer of the Board of Insurance Medicine no later than three months prior to the expected date of the examination.

On completion of the above requirements, the successful candidate will be certified as a Diplomate of the Board of Insurance Medicine.
